A hoist is one of the cheapest pieces of capital equipment on a factory floor and one of the most expensive to get wrong. The wrong choice rarely fails dramatically — it runs slowly, trips its overload, wears out early, and quietly costs an operator ten minutes on every cycle for eight years. This is a practical framework for specifying one for an Indian plant.
Start with the load, not the catalogue
Most enquiries begin with a capacity figure — "we need a two-tonne hoist". That is the last number to fix, not the first. Before capacity, write down four things about the load:
- Heaviest single item, including pallet, fixture, jig, slings or lifting beam. Rigging routinely adds 30–80 kg nobody costed.
- Typical item — what the machine sees all day. If the heaviest load is 1,800 kg but 95 per cent of lifts are 400 kg, the duty profile matters more than the peak.
- Shape and balance. A die block and a long sheet-metal fabrication of equal mass need different hooks, spreaders and lifting speeds.
- Attachment point. Eyebolts, slings, magnets, vacuum pads and C-hooks all change effective capacity and required hook height.
Then add margin deliberately: heaviest load plus rigging, plus 15–25 per cent headroom, rounded up to the next standard capacity. Over-sizing beyond that is not free — a heavier hoist needs a heavier runway beam, a stronger structure and a bigger supply.
Map the movement before you pick the machine
Capacity says what can be lifted; geometry says what can be done. Sketch the movement in plan and answer one question: does the load move within a radius, along a line, or across an area?
- Radius around a fixed point — a machine tool loading its own bed, a welding bay, a press. A wall- or pillar-mounted jib crane is almost always the cheapest correct answer.
- Along a line — a straight transfer between two stations. A monorail or beam trolley gives the travel without the cost of a bridge.
- Across an area — a full bay, multiple machines, unpredictable pick points. An overhead travelling crane or gantry earns its price here; a jib will frustrate everyone within a month.
- Between floors, or vertical only — a goods lift or a stacker, not a hoist bolted over a stairwell.
The commonest and most expensive error is buying a jib crane for an area problem; the second commonest is buying a bridge crane for a radius problem. Ten minutes with a floor plan and a compass catches both.
Duty class is the specification most buyers skip
Two hoists with identical 2,000 kg rating plates can differ in price by a factor of three, and the reason is almost always duty class — starts per hour and mean effective load. Buying a light-duty unit for a heavy-duty application is the most reliable way to be back in the market in eighteen months.

State your duty band on the enquiry and ask each supplier which mechanism class they quoted against; a quotation that cannot answer is not comparable with one that can. The relevant Indian Standards are the usual references here — the IS 807 and IS 3938 families for structural portion and electric wire-rope hoists, IS 3832 for hand-operated chain pulley blocks. Ask which edition your supplier has built to rather than assuming.
Power is a site question, not a product question
Indian sites vary enormously in what is actually available at the pick point, and the hoist has to suit the supply rather than the other way around.
- 415 V three-phase at the column is the ideal case and allows the widest choice, including dual-speed hoisting.
- 230 V single-phase only is common in job shops. It limits you to smaller motors and single speed — workable, but say so before quoting, not after delivery.
- Unstable or DG-backed supply. Ask for wider input-voltage tolerance and specify phase-failure and single-phase preventer protection. It costs little at order stage and prevents burnt windings.
- No usable supply — a remote yard, a temporary bay, impractical cable routing. A manual chain block or a hydraulic solution is not a downgrade here; it is the correct answer.
The geometry that quietly kills installations
Confirm four dimensions on site with a tape, not from a drawing that may predate the last shed extension:
- Available headroom from finished floor to the underside of the beam or truss.
- Required hook height — highest point the hook must reach, plus sling length, plus load height.
- Hook approach — how close the hook gets to the end of the runway or the wall. It decides whether the last machine in the row can be served at all.
- Structural capacity of the beam, column or roof member. A hoist the building cannot carry is a safety incident waiting for a date, and having the structure assessed is the buyer's responsibility.
Environment: dust, humidity and the monsoon
Indian factory environments punish equipment specified for a catalogue photograph. Match enclosure and finish to the room:
- Textile and paper plants — airborne lint packs into brake assemblies and cooling paths. Sealed enclosures, shorter cleaning intervals.
- Foundries, forging and grinding — abrasive dust and radiant heat. Higher IP rating on panels; heat-tolerant cable near the source.
- Coastal, high-humidity and monsoon sites — a four-month wet season is a corrosion programme. Specify surface protection and sealed control stations, and treat chain and rope lubrication as a scheduled task.
Operator reality and safety
Decide who operates the hoist and from where. A pendant keeps the operator at the load but also inside the danger zone; a radio remote lets them stand clear and see the whole path, usually worth the small premium in busy bays. Either way, put the safety fundamentals in the quotation as line items rather than assumptions: overload protection, upper and lower limit switches, emergency stop, hook safety latch and a legible rating plate. Confirm a test certificate at commissioning and support for the periodic thorough examination your statutory obligations require.
A ten-year cost view, not a purchase-order view
Take the same 2 tonne application. Hoist A is light-duty at a notional 1.0 unit of purchase price; Hoist B is duty-matched at 1.6 units. If A is replaced once in ten years, needs three unplanned repairs and stops a cell for four hours each time, the cheaper machine has already lost: twelve hours of unplanned downtime commonly exceeds the 0.6-unit price difference on its own. That is not an argument for always buying the dearest option — it is an argument for putting duty class, spares availability and service response into the comparison table alongside price.
A selection checklist you can send with your RFQ
- Heaviest load including rigging; typical load; lifts per hour; shifts per day.
- Movement type — radius, line or area — with a marked-up floor plan.
- Required hook height, available headroom, hook approach at both ends.
- Supply available at the pick point, and whether it is DG-backed or unstable.
- Environment: dust type, ambient temperature, humidity, wash-down.
- Duty band and the mechanism class quoted against.
- Safety items included: overload protection, limit switches, e-stop, hook latch.
- Spares list with prices and stated lead times; service response commitment.
- Test certificate at commissioning and operator training scope.
Send that list unchanged to every supplier. The quotations that come back will be comparable, and the differences will be real engineering differences rather than differences in what each vendor chose to assume.
